  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a trainee quantity surveyor, I record costs of labour, plant and materials on a building site and estimate future costs. As well as dealing with sub-contract work and pricing up work for a client.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills with I.T as well as gaining knowledge of the construction industry. I have developed better skills on microsoft excel as well as personal skills such as communication.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • With all things it has its good and bad points but on the whole I have enjoyed my experience.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Laing O'Rourke?
  • I feel very valued by Laing O'Rourke with the amount of support I receive as well as the work opportunities offered to me.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured with opportunities to catch up with the rest of my year of apprentices and learn new skills at workshops through the year.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive a lot of training from the company however on some occasions I have been left to learn some things by myself however this is important to gain independence.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots of support from my employer; with training courses available and workshops during the year to catch up with the rest of my cohort to compare experiences and progress.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Initially my salary was tight to meet my costs but now I am in my second year my salary has improved and I can live within my means. However I would like to see my salary increase

  • Yes

  • The training that the company provide as well as paying for my university qualification is a great opportunity to earn a salary as well as gain invaluable training and work experiences.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Laing O'Rourke?
  • Do some research on the type of work and projects that the company is involved with, and research what job role you are applying for to make sure that is the work role you want to be doing.
