Quantity Surveyor Review

As a Trainee Quantity Surveyor i carry out commercial tasks on large scale construction projects on a day to day basis. Some of the main tasks i undertake include pulling together the contracts to send out to subcontractors, i value the work carried out on site and forecast and monitor the costs of, plant, material and labour being used out on site. My 4 projects I have worked on in the past 2 years have ranged from £35million residential to £500million science and research facility.

I have gained lots of skills through my time at Laing O'Rourke and the most notable skill i can identify is the professionalism. I have seen myself grow into a much more professional and confident person due to the high level of interaction with company directors and construction workers. Also plenty of on the job training helps this aswell and i am currently working towards my BSC Quantity Surveying.

I enjoy the challenge of being part of this programme, you can make it as hard as you like by pushing for more and more. It keeps you busy and there is always something new to push for if you show willing. The culture within the programme is very sociable and friendly which also makes the hard and long hours seem worth it/bearable.

Appreciation has varied from the different managers i have had over my time here. Some managers have appreciated the help and workload i take on whereas some just expect it.

The programme is well structured and leads you in the right direction with a variety of challenging and motivational modules.

Basic support is provided along the way throughout the programme but sometimes further support needs to be identified yourself to push for more challenges.

There is always support there from Laing O'Rourke if you need it.

The salary provided on the cadet programme is probably just bearable to live outside of London but for the most part I still prefer to live at home and save till I come of the programme to move out.

Lots of outside activities such as football, charity events, free drinks for project milestones in london, hotel conferences, christmas parties.
