  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves designing and creating engineering drawings and solutions within the Power Transmission and Distribution sector.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many different skills throughout my time with Balfour Beatty so far. These include, interpreting engineering data, structural calculations, creating drawings at a high standard and developing confidence with engineering and the power industries terminology.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme as it is a great mix of academic and work training. Throughout the programme, I have also been able to do residential trips to the lake district and learn key civil engineering skills such as Setting Out via a course with the University of Birmingham.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the programme could be better in some instances. There is sometimes uncertainty of which team I will rotate to each year which then leaves me waiting with little notice of what my job my entail in the future.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Balfour Beatty really does ensure that I and any apprentice gets the support they need. There has never been an instance where my colleagues haven't supported me in my work and also for my academic studies.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I haven't received much support from my training provider throughout the programme.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Due to me working in a sector that isn't widely covered by Universities compared to Highways, drainage or geotechnics. Some topics on the course are not very relevant to my job role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many opportunities to attend and meet some great people. In my time with the company I have attended many residentials and events.

  • Yes
