  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a Trainee Estimator is to assist the pricing lead on tenders in Scotland/North. My day to day role is incredibly varied as I work within bid teams, often within different sectors of the construction industry. I often undertake measurement exercises, market testing and reconciliation exercises on live tenders.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My skills have grown hugely since joining LOR, mainly my construction technology and communication; also my IT skills have improved a lot due to the in house training modules in place.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme a lot as I have a good support network from my current team and a mentor away from my day to day role. I enjoy learning new things which I am doing daily and also enjoy the modules in place through the cadet programme.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Laing O'Rourke?
  • The whole business is aware of the cadet/graduate programmes and most are willing to invest time into your learning to improve the future of the business. In the main, most people who I have worked with have invested a lot of time into my development.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Within my programme I have a Line manager, HR Rep and a mentor; on top of this I have outstanding day to day support within my team. I also have training modules to improve my other skills such as leadership, teamwork, business sense ect. These modules are testing although after every module I have come away with new/improved skills.

  • LOR are the training provider (see below).

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As mentioned above, I receive a lot of support from all levels of the business and have had the opportunity to work on tenders all over the UK.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is what I believe to industry average, although within univeristy there are other contractors offering a higher salary. I believe the overall package including the modules offer more than the extra salary.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The cadet programme is a fantastic entry level programme into the construction industry, on a day to day basis you will work with some of the best construction professionals within the industry. As a company who challenges the face of construction you will constantly witness industry pioneering processes being used right through from tender stage to completion.

  • Research the Laing O'Rourke GSR. Understand fully the role you are applying for. Read into MMC.
