  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I currently am on a project control placement, keeping track of the project timescale and cost. This involves producing weekly and monthly metrics packs to inform the project manager and key stakeholders of the current project position.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • There are a large range of qualifications that can be gained through this apprenticeship, various qualifications from the course and on the job project control courses. There is also a variety of training courses online which can be added to training plan, which are available for personal development as well as professional.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The course provides the opportunity to experience a wide array of different roles and experiences. It is also very beneficial to gain experience working with different teams which improves personal development. The company culture is a pleasant one, which will support your development and so far the apprenticeship has been very challenging yet enjoyable.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • BAE Systems places this scheme in high esteem and the achievements and are largely recognised and followed ( such as winning the APM Wessex Challenge. The opportunities to be involved with the project also means that you can become a valued member of the project team.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As this is the first year that this scheme has been run in Maritime services, it has been fairly well organised, making some minor tweaks along the way. There was an induction week and training and support is readily available.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We are able to phone or email our tutors when we need additional support, providing us with an accessible support network for guidance or problems. I feel the support that is received is prompt and appropriate for our programme needs.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel the general support from our Manager and our placement managers is very good, as we are able to book meetings and discuss our development or concerns with them on a regular basis. There is support available to match any needs.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary is on par with the majority of apprenticeships offered at BAE systems. The starting salary will be assessed on a regular basis to hopefully increase. This regular pay review helps with increasing living and social costs.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are opportunities that you are able to get involved in such as the sports teams also supporting BAE charities and various other opportunities. It is essential to revise and write assignments thus meaning during term time, you time may be spend doing this.

  • Yes

  • There are so many opportunities to excel within the company and so many various avenues to explore that it is a great place to aid your development and progress.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Ensure that you research the job role and that the daily tasks which encompass this job role would suit you and your needs. The initial online tests can be daunting, but just ensure that you are prepared for them and treat them in a similar fashion to normal exams, (quiet room, swot up on relevant knowledge).
