  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Engineering technician, my day to day roles consist of workshop based work in the light fabrication section. I do a lot of TIG welding and other fabricationw rok.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have both learnt new skills and developed existing, primarily the first of the two as going into my apprenticeship I had next to no experience whatsoever in an engineering environment.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The actual apprenticeship itself was okay, I was in the first year so it was very much the guinnea pig year. since finishing the apprenticeship however I have extremely enjoyed my time at DSTL

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Dstl?
  • I feel very valued by managers and team members alike, it is a good place to work and the work itself is very enjoyable. would definitely recommend to others.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • When I did it the structure was'nt too great as it was the guinnea pig year. since then however I believe it has improved massively and only hear good things.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The support provided by my training provider is really good. The facilities were great and all in all it was a good experience. also met a lot of good people along the way.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support provided by my employer is really good. any training I would like to carry out is granted as long as I can justify why I am doing it.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The pay is good enough for what I need! I live quite near to work so travel costs are low and I'm a young man so living costs are relatively low too!

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Loads, I often go out with my colleagues for different social events. there are plenty of sports clubs within the workplace also like football, rugby squash etc.

  • 9. Would you recommend Dstl to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great place to work with plenty of challenges and opportunities to experience new things, the diversity of the work within the company is huge also and team are not afraid to involve you.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dstl?
  • Be confident, show you have put some research into what the company does and just have a good overall attitude. I think the interviews could be arranged a bit better for my particular apprenticeship.
