'You're a wizard, Harry.'

'I'm a what?'

Iconic words. Fantastic words, you might say.

21 years after J. K. Rowling published Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and after 8 films and a stage play, the newest instalment of the Fantastic Beasts saga is here... Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

We thought it would be the perfect moment to bring you a (Potter-themed) guide to the fantastic options available to you after you leave school or college.

Aged 16 +

What qualifications will you get?

  • magic
    Advanced apprenticeship (level 3) → NVQ Level 3 and a knowledge-based qualification → equivalent to 2 A levels
  • Higher apprenticeship (level 4/5/6/7) → NVQ Level 4, Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree

More and more students are taking the apprenticeship route after they have finished their GCSEs or A-levels. When you think of an apprentice, the mind tends to picture a young person in a hi viz vest, overalls and a hard hat, probably called 'Terry'.

No more. Apprenticeships have changed, and are available in wide-range of industries, from accounting to engineering, law to IT. Apprentices study towards valuable qualifications, while they work full-time with an employer. All apprentices receive a salary, while avoiding fees and student debt!

As Ronald Weasley would say – bloody brilliant.

Traineeships

Who are they for?

16-24

Traineeships are designed for anyone between the ages of 16 and 24, to help them learn essential employability skills that will help them find a career. A traineeship will help you acquire the skills that employers look for in apprentices, graduates and future employees.

These are flexible programmes that focus on literacy and numeracy, and can also include work experience placements. If you leave school without the grades for an apprenticeship, a traineeship will qualify you for an intermediate level scheme.

Check out our traineeships guide, it’s got more charm than Ginny Weasley.

Fantastic schemes, and you can find vacancies for all on RateMyApprenticeship. If Harry, Ron and Hermione hadn’t been searching for Horcruxes after they left Hogwarts, they would have applied for an apprenticeship.

Who knows, in the next Fantastic Beasts film, Newt Scamander might be searching for an apprenticeship instead of magical creatures. It's unlikely, but J.K. Rowling might surprise us all.
